Our speaker for January is Ron Parsons, fellow POS member, and renowned flower photographer. Ron is considered by many to be one of the finest flower photographers in the US, and he spends every spare minute photographing orchids, wildflowers, bromeliads, cacti and just about every other sort of plant. He has traveled many thousands of miles to photograph North American native orchids in situ, and his slide collection (reputed to be in excess of 80,000 slides!) and in-depth knowledge of our native species is legendary. Ron recently received the photographer of the year award from the California Horticultural society for his photographs in the book Masdevallias, Gems of the Orchid World (Timber Press). Ron recently completed a second book on a genus of spectacular wildflowers native to Western North and Central America called Calochortus: Mariposa Lilies and their Relatives, which is due for release in June of 2007. Ron always gives a great, information-filled presentation with awe-inspiring photographs. We look forward to learning more about where and how native orchids grow, their conservation and a delightful visual experience!
