Lou Jost

Lou Jost, 49, is a physicist by training but an ecologist at heart. He was an environmental consultant on endangered birds and plants in Texas, but now lives in Ecuador and studies orchids and mathematical ecology full time. He has discovered over 70 new species of orchids, and has developed a new set of mathematics for measuring biodiversity. Most recently he cofounded the EcoMinga Foundation to set up plant biodiversity reserves in Ecuador. He is a Research Associate of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
